MoPi Lower Trail or The Mormon Pioneer Trail is a mountain biking trail with one of the best payoffs. The steady climb to the 2nd road crossing is one of our favorites in the Salt Lake City area. The 2nd road crossing is a perfect out and back turn around spot. However, you can continue the trail to the top of the mountain and from there you have a few options for downhill. But for this video we chose the out and back at the 2nd road crossing.

The ride starts at the Little Dell Reservoir parking lot and ascends more or less parallel to the road. Following the signage, you will quickly get to the first road crossing where you will need to go slightly down the road before the trail continues on the right. This trail has evolved over the years, it now bypasses the campground with a newly created section of trail that stays on the high side of the mountain.

Right after the north part of the campground, the ascent steepens, but is still good for beginners. A few miles more and you will reach the 2nd road crossing. Now turn around and enjoy one of the most satisfying cross country downhill. It’s just chill… and that is the way we like it.

However, the decent does have some large rocky sections, but they are few and far between. Park at the Yellow Pine Trailhead (NOT Yellow Pine Campground). Start straight north towards the farming fences. The bridge on the right is where you will return.

Suggested direction is clockwise, which is super fun and definitely the way to go, but you could go the other way with no problems. Cross through the farm gates and start up the 2 track until you get to the yellow sign telling you to go left for MTB. Then the climb is super gradual. The downhill starts with a quick cross over Slate Creek and never stops until you reach the parking lot again.
